If Ya Smell What The Rock Is Cooking
Multi-time WWE Champion turned blockbuster movie star Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is easily one of the biggest stars pro wrestling has ever produced, with his unique charisma and incredible ability to cut silver-tongued promos during the legendary Attitude Era. On top of all that, there's his iconic catchphrase, "If you smell what The Rock is cooking," which is often misquoted as "Do you smell what The Rock is cooking?" or "Can you smell what The Rock is cooking?"
Regardless of which version you prefer, there are countless memes based on this classic phrase, so let's check the funniest ones.
9 The Classical Version
Here's a meme that directly references using one's sense of smell to discern what The Rock is cooking. This meme is based on a self-portrait by Joseph Ducreux, a painter in the 1700s who's best remembered for a humorous approach to rendering people.
After all, this title of this painting translates to "Self-Portrait of the Artist in the Guise of a Mockingbird." Typically this painting is used in memes to rephrase rap lyrics in an old-timey manner, but it's also applicable to wrestling catchphrases.
8 The Coffee Version
The Rock was really meant to be a movie star. After all, he's one of the most expressive performers in wrestling history. Just look at the face featured in this above meme, where Rocky appears to be smelling something really good.
Any avid coffee drinker can certainly relate to this meme, as fresh coffee is a downright dazzling aroma. Maybe "what The Rock is cooking" was a bit misleading and the verb he meant to use was "brewing."
7 The Bacon Version
Another fragrant breakfast item that people love is bacon. The greasy strips of pork fat have become a meme unto itself in the 21st century thanks to stunt cooking shows like Epic Meal Time and lots and lots of novelty merchandise created to cash in on bacon's cult popularity.
This meme goes an extra step for the joke of The Rock cooking bacon, incorporating actor Kevin Bacon due to his evocative surname.
6 The Non-Wrestling Version
Here's one for whatever Harry Potter fans are left in the world at this point in history. Not everyone can smell what The Rock is cooking. After all, some people don't have senses of smell, like Selma Bouvier in The Simpsons or, in this case, the primary antagonist of the Harry Potter series, Voldemort.
Dark magic cost "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" his nose, so he's just got a couple of slits on his face. He can probably still smell things, but the joke is still funny.
5 The Wrestling Version
For those fans who think Harry Potter is for babies, here's John Cena, who has also been considered to be for babies. This meme comes from the time that Seth Rollins accidentally broke Cena's nose with a ripcord knee gone wrong in a match on Raw, which created the above incredible image.
WWE really needed to sell that image on a T-shirt. Anyway, this meme takes on an added dimension when you remember that Cena and The Rock feuded across two WrestleManias from 2012 to 2013.
4 The Unwilling-to-Participate Version
Here's a hilariously baffling little meme. It's just, "Do you smell what The Rock is cooking," a picture of Dean Ambrose in his old Shield gear, and "Nope." This is likely in reference to The Rock's feud with CM Punk circa the Royal Rumble pay-per-view in 2013, which involved The Shield attacking Rocky.
What's fun about this meme is being reminded how many weird faces Dean Ambrose used to make when he was in the Shield during their first run as heels.
3 The Comedy Central Version
Chappelle's Show was the show for an entire generation that came of age in the early to mid-2000s, as jokes about Rick James and Lil Jon became quoted ad nauseam by high schoolers and college kids.
One of Dave Chappelle's iconic recurring characters was Tyrone Biggums, an incredibly itchy cartoon version of a crack addict. This meme does a pretty great job playing off of The Rock's catchphrase to come up with a punchline worthy of the character.
2 The Wholesome Version
Not every meme is thoughtful and sensitive. Some, you might be surprised to find, are straight-up offensive. The above meme actually plays off another meme you can find floating around the 'net, which is the same series of images, except the last panel is basically "Then you better make dinner."
This meme, however, subverts that sexist punchline by making the last panel innocent and wholesome and therefore more appropriate to put in a listicle.
1 The Low-Key Version
With memes, less is often more. This meme is a great example of that principle, as it's just an image of The Rock in the legitimately fun Michael Bay film Pain & Gain, accompanied by his catchphrase.
Anything else would over-explain the joke, making the meme way less funny in the process. The thing The Rock is cooking in this scene? You might be surprised to find out that it's human flesh.
